The West New York Board of Education was experiencing a growth in their student population, and there were concerns that a shortage could exist of certain types of classrooms. RSC Architects was brought in to critically examine the West New York Memorial High School, a three-story concrete and masonry veneer building that was constructed in the early 1900s, as well as to create schematic designs that could accommodate its future growth. Annex B (formerly known as St. Joseph’s of the Palisades), which was constructed around the same time, is also a part of Memorial High School.
RSC designed the alterations of and the renovations to several rooms in order to convert the existing traditional laboratory and lecture classrooms at Memorial High School and Annex B into 15,580 s.f. of multi-disciplinary science spaces with eight individual classrooms – some with a prep room in between. These renovations also provided more flexibility for class scheduling and course offerings within the Science Department for all four years and levels of high school education.
