RSC Architects’ design of this new 54,480 s.f. Public Library and Municipal Complex for the Township of Pennsauken, which features distinct precast concrete panels, metal panel canopies, and curtain wall facade treatments, unites all of the Township’s library and municipal functions within one facility.
Its three-story public library is situated along the building’s eastern elevation, with its two-story municipal complex positioned along its western side, both accessible via a central lobby.
The public library features a two-story book stack and reading area, with a mezzanine, circulation desk, cafe, administrative offices, and conference rooms. Its third floor contains similar spaces; however, it is dedicated to the programming and library needs of children, young adults, and teenagers. The library’s cultural center includes a platform, a kitchen area, and dedicated restrooms, allowing various events to take place both within the library and for the municipality.
The municipal complex houses all of the Township’s administrative staff members, including a commissioner public meeting room, a lunch room, and shared facilities for various departments, with controlled access for the public. An outdoor seating area was also be incorporated within the design.
The Township’s former library, located along the eastern end of the project’s site, was demolished now that the construction of the new complex, along the northern end of the site, is complete. This allowed the original library’s site to be used for additional parking spaces and to allocate an area for outdoor performance venues.
