Groundbreaking in its design and execution, this project provides a new, state-of-the-art educational facility for an in-need district; contributes to the City’s redevelopment program; merges the population of two existing high schools; and presents a space-saving solution for a new athletic field.
RSC Architects served as the Lead Architect for the 366,400 s.f. Union City High School, which is designed to accommodate 1,700 students. Its educational spaces are housed within a four-story, L-shaped classroom wing, with two stories of shared activity spaces at the core of the school. It also features 66 classrooms, home economics rooms, art and dance studios, technology laboratories, a media center, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, an outdoor courtyard, and a 900-seat performing arts auditorium – a first for the district.
When faced with creating an athletic field that would displace 2,000 homes, RSC creatively designed the field on the roof of the new school, with a regulation-sized high school baseball field, a soccer/football field, a grandstand area, locker rooms, and bleacher seating for 2,000 spectators.
