This new, state-of-the-art elementary school was designed to fit within a tight urban site in Union City, New Jersey. In order to make the most of the area, RSC Architects designed space-saving solutions, such as an underground parking garage and a rooftop playground. In order to preserve the historical components of the site’s previous building, key elements of the old building were salvaged and creatively re-purposed for the new building. For instance, the existing porticos now serve as dramatic entryways for the new school’s auditorium.
Totaling 121,505 s.f., this three-story facility was designed to serve more than seven-hundred students in kindergarten through the fifth grade. The building features more than thirty-five classrooms, a media center, science laboratories, a gymnasium, an auditorium, art and music rooms, and a cafeteria with a full-size kitchen. It also includes two elevators, two play areas, and parking for forty-six vehicles.
