RSC Architects, through a bridging design services contract with the New Jersey Schools Development Authority, is providing bridging design documents for the construction of a new, four-story K-5 elementary school located on the existing Woodrow Wilson School #5 site within Garfield, New Jersey. The existing Woodrow Wilson School will be demolished upon the construction of the new building.
This 132,500 s.f. facility will serve approximately 852 students, and it will incorporate the following instructional spaces:
- Six kindergarten classrooms.
- Eighteen classrooms for Grades 1-3.
- Twelve classrooms for Grades 4-5.
- Six self-contained special education classrooms.
- Ten small group instruction rooms.
- STEAM, art, and life skills laboratories, as well as music rooms and a media center.
In addition, the Garfield Elementary School will offer a full-service kitchen and cafeteria that can serve 288 students per seating, with three seatings each day, along with a gymnasium and a multi-purpose room with a stage. Administrative support spaces include a nurse’s suite with three cots, a separate private examination room, an occupational and physical therapy/sensory room, guidance counselor offices, child study team offices, a main office suite, an emergency control center and a back-up center, and custodial support offices and spaces.
A 15,000 s.f. outdoor recreational and recess area will provide space for various play equipment, as well as painted ground games and pickleball courts that can accommodate two physical education classes.
