This 2,460 s.f. addition, which is built within an existing courtyard at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, houses a new, completely self-shielded Zap-X machine for the hospital’s gyroscopic radiosurgery platform. This first-in-the-world pairing of a Zap-X machine with a Synaptive MRI offers an advanced, accurate, and rapid form of radiation therapy to treat brain tumors and conditions of the head in neck in a non-invasive, painless manner. This project also serves as the fifth installation of this state-of-the-art equipment within the United States, with the addition and new Zap-X Center for Noninvasive Neurosurgery containing a .5 Telsa MRI, a control room, a waiting room, and two offices.

Situated between Jersey Shore University Medical Center’s radiology department, a public connection to an existing linear accelerator vault, and a parking garage with visitor access, the Zap-X machine is displayed as a centerpiece for the public. Positioned behind an existing glass public corridor to the parking garage, the MRI and Zap-X rooms are designed with switchable film and decorative lighting to showcase the equipment to passersby when it is not in use.
