RSC Architects partnered with the Hudson County Schools of Technology and the Bayonne School District to assist in preparing the preliminary design for their joint application to the State of New Jersey for the “Securing Our Children’s Future” Bond Act. Following that successful application, RSC was selected by the Hudson County Schools of Technology to provide architectural and engineering services as they relate to the new Hudson County Vocational Campus at Bayonne High School.
This new, two-story, 37,690 s.f. school building is planned to accommodate students within grades nine through twelve. Its envisioned programming includes building trades (carpentry, plumbing, and welding) and cosmetology. A joint project area has also been included within the design, giving students the ability to collaborate on larger projects and delve further into project coordination.
In order to provide access to the City of Bayonne and greater Hudson County, the school will be situated within Bayonne High School’s central courtyard. Built during the height of the Great Depression, the iconic Bayonne Junior and Senior High Schools are landmark Neo-Gothic buildings that showcase the phenomenal skills of the tradesmen of the day, while offering modern-day trade education. These buildings largely influenced the design of the proposed vocational school, while still incorporating modern technology, such as state-of-the-art CNC machines, a woodshop, and a plumbing laboratory. Using these technological applications, students will be able to gain real world experience in contemporary classrooms with a proper pedagogical approach.
