RSC Architects’ design of this new STEM facility for Hudson County Community College within Jersey City houses ten science laboratories – including microbiology, genetics, and engineering laboratories – while consolidating the College’s STEM programs into one stand-alone location.
Fully accessible by public transportation, this building acts as a “beacon” that welcomes students to the campus. Once inside, the light-filled lobby and outdoor courtyard are common spaces for students to collaborate. The main level hosts a multi-purpose room that is used for lectures and science demonstrations. Students can also view the expertly-designed laboratories, which are enclosed within a glass storefront system, from the central common areas. The laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual and information technology tools that allow for simultaneous activities and group collaboration.
The building’s design incorporated sustainable design elements in order to achieve LEED Silver certification.
