RSC Architects designed a new 75-bed transition center within Hackensack, New Jersey to replace Bergen County’s existing homeless shelter and alleviate their shortage of shelter beds.
This crucial County facility was constructed on the same site as the existing development in order to allow the shelter to function without the loss of beds or services, and in a manner that complements its surrounding residential and commercial neighborhood. RSC maximized the area’s limited available square footage by designing a two-story, L-shaped facility that fulfilled the center’s complex programming requirement of maintaining separate men’s and women’s quarters.
This well-conceived, attentive design allows the center to provide transition services rather than solely lodging, with bright and open day rooms; administrative and counseling areas; a main dining hall that offers cafeteria-style food service; and cheerful, comfortable double rooms.
Upon the occupancy of the facility, the existing shelter was demolished, making space for staff parking, outdoor recreation areas, and relaxation areas for the residents.
