New Jersey’s First Design-Build School
New Jersey’s First Design-Build School
Groundbreaking in design and execution, this project provides a new, state-of-the-art educational facility for an in-need district; contributes to the City’s redevelopment program; merges the population of two existing high schools; and presents a space-saving solution for a new athletic field.
RSC served as the Lead Architect for the 366,400 s.f. Union City High School, which is designed to accommodate 1,700 students. Its educational spaces are housed within a four-story, L-shaped classroom wing, with two stories of shared activity spaces at the core of the school. It also features 66 classrooms, home economics rooms, art and dance studios, technology labs, a media center, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, an outdoor courtyard, and a 900-seat performing arts auditorium – a first for the district.
When faced with creating an athletic field that would displace 2,000 homes, RSC creatively design the field on the roof of the new school, with a regulation-sized high school baseball field, a soccer/football field, a grandstand area, locker rooms, and bleacher seating for 2,000 spectators.
